English prose fiction 1558–1700; A Critical history
This book is a critical study of the development of English prose fiction from the Elizabethan period (1558) to the early eighteenth century. Paul Salzman traces the earliest forms of narrative prose, including romances, adventure stories, morality plays, and proto-novellas that preceded the modern novel. Through literary historical analysis and critical reading, the book explains the cultural, political, and social contexts that influenced the growth of English fiction during the Renaissance and Restoration periods. This work is an important reference for the study of early modern English literature.
