Engaging with Russia: The next phase
Every nation, of course, has its own peculiarities and distinctive facets. Down the ages, however, Russia has suffered more than most from attempts simply to superimpose Western values and to transplant Western experience into a country that has followed its own route, on the fringes of Europe and Asia, Christendom and Islam, ever since Prince Vladimir of Kievan Rus chose the Orthodox Church of Byzantium in preference to Catholicism or Islam just over a thousand years ago. This is a nation that in the course of the second Christian millennium... rose out of obscure origins and inhospitable surroundings to build the largest land empire of all time and one of the world's great cultures.
