Salikan Hardjo (1910-1993) devoted his entire life to representing the interests of his people, the Surinamese Javanese. He was born on Java and grew up in Suriname since 1920 as the son of Javanese contract workers. In the 1930s, under the pseudonym Bok Sark, he wrote fierce articles against the colonial administration and the way in which Javanese contract workers were treated in Suriname.
