Press and politics in the Sudan
This study examines the historical development of the press and its close relationship with political power in Sudan. Beginning with the early decades of the twentieth century, the author analyzes how newspapers emerged as influential platforms for political mobilization, public debate, and nationalist expression. The work explores the role of major political parties, the influence of successive governments, and the impact of censorship and state regulation on the functioning of the Sudanese press. In particular, the book highlights the complex interactions between journalists, intellectuals, state authorities, and political movements during periods of democratic governance as well as military rule. By tracing changes in media legislation, institutional control, and editorial independence, the study provides insight into how the press both shaped and was shaped by Sudan’s turbulent political landscape. This volume is an important reference for understanding media-state relations in Sudan and for scholars of African political communication.
