Text
The Oxford history of the American people by Samuel Eliot Morison
Without neglecting political history, it contains more social history than any other book of similar size. It treats of popular sports and pastimes, such as shooting, fishing, horse racing, and sail- ing: eating and drinking customs; devel- opments in fine arts, music, and medicine; deals with the revolution in sexual mores, and pays particular attention to the American Indian. The parallel history of Canada is also briefly told. There are new and fresh accounts of the nation's wars, written not for specialists but for the general reader
