Ethiopia: Anatomy of a traditional polity
Ethiopia: Anatomy of a Traditional Polity is an in-depth study by John Markakis on the political and social structure of Ethiopia prior to modern transformation. This book explores how traditional institutions, relations between the center and the regions, and the ethno-political power system shaped the character of the Ethiopian state throughout its history. Using an anthropological and historical approach, Markakis describes patterns of leadership, distribution of authority, and internal dynamics of the Ethiopian empire. This edition is a 1975 reprint by Oxford University Press, Addis Ababa, and is an important reference for researchers of East African political history, political anthropology, and traditional constitutional studies.
