What kind of country?: Australia and the twenty first century

I had wanted to write a book about Australia in the twenty first century so as to write about the Australia I liked, or perhaps wanted. I hoped, too, that Australia would be more successful in the next century than it had managed to be in this one. The twentieth century had been America's, not just in the sense that the United States became a dominanta power during it but because the style of the century reflected a desire to be modern which was essentially American. For reasons explained in this book, the turmoil of the twentieth century did not suit the young Australian nation.
