Java in a time of revolution: Occupation and resistance, 1944–1946
Java in a Time of Revolution is Benedict Anderson's in-depth study of the political, social and military dynamics in Java during the Japanese occupation until the beginning of the Indonesian Revolution (1944–1946). This book traces changes in power structures, the emergence of radical youth groups, the growth of the spirit of nationalism, as well as resistance to Japanese colonialism and the return of the Dutch. Anderson uses archival documents, military records, interviews, and field sources to present a comprehensive picture of Java's upheaval during the transition to independence. This work has become one of the most important academic references in modern Indonesian studies.
