The Malay archipelago: The Land of the orang-utan and the bird of paradise
The Malay Archipelago is a classic work by Alfred Russel Wallace, first published in 1869 and considered one of the most influential travel and natural science books about the Indonesian archipelago. The book describes Wallace's eight-year journey through the Malay Archipelago, including Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua. In his book, Wallace documented the biodiversity, animal behavior, unique people, culture, and natural conditions of the region. His discoveries in this region included a faunal dividing line later known as the Wallace Line, which made a significant contribution to the theory of evolution.
