China's watergate : Political and economic conflicts, 1969-1977
Leo Goodstadt is uniquely qualified to write an inside report on the crises which have shaken China throughout this decade. He has devoted his entire career since 1962 to research and writing on Chinese events. In this book, he brings together a fascinating account of the background to the collapse of Mao Tse-tung's entourage and of respect for his immediate family within a month of his death in 1976. The arrest and secret trial of his wife sets the stage for a dramatic analysis of power struggles in Peking. The personalities involved are portrayed with great verve. The popular image of the late Chou En-lai as the ideal diplomat and the dedicated moderate influence in Peking is shown to be mistaken. Instead, Chou En-lai is revealed as a sharp, calculating politician who timed an assault on Mao Tse-tung's prestige with great finesse.
The role of Chou En-lai in the mysterious death in 1971 of the man selected as Mao Tse-tung's official heir is brought out forcefully. The study describes in detail how Mao Tse-tung was persuaded to choose an heir after Chou En-lai died who was acceptable to the Communist Party veterans. The process by which the old guard has set about grooming this successor while keeping him on a rein is an important feature of the book.
A new portrait emerges from this challenging analysis of today's
China.
