The Making of a bureaucratic elite
Admirers and critics of the Dutch Colonial regime alike conceded that one of its greatest strengths was its utilization of the Javanese aristocracy as a ruling elite. This book explains the nature and the values of that elite, and the ways in which its functions were gradually changed by Dutch pressure, Western education, and nationalist challenge. Dr. Sutherland argues that the features many scholars label 'traditional' in the modern Indonesian polity in fact owe less to pre-colonial Java than they do to the moulding of the priyayi class by the Dutch. Heather Sutherland has an M.A. in Asian Civilizations from the Australian National University, and a Ph.D. in History from Yale. She is currently ad Reader at the Free University in Amsterdam.
