Indian Indonesia relations: 1961-1980
Inspired by centuries of mutual political, commercial, and cultural relations, and against the background of India’s spontaneous support during the Dutch–Indonesian struggle, this study examines the interaction of India and Indonesia from 1961 to 1980. While the early years reflected mutual goodwill and cooperation, later decades showed limitations, differing priorities, and ideological divergences which strained the relationship and restricted durable friendship.
Based primarily on the author’s Ph.D. thesis covering the crucial years 1961–1967, the book explores in depth several major developments, including the liberation of Goa, restoration of West Irian, the Sondhi Affair, China’s actions along India’s borders, the emergence of Malaysia, and the convening of the second Bandung-type and Belgrade-type conferences.
This study illuminates a relatively less explored area of inter-Asian relations, revealing how internal and external forces shaped the trajectory of India–Indonesia relations during two critical decades.
