Jawaharlal Nehru : A Biography, Volume II 1947-1956
The second volume of Sarvepalli Gopal's remarkable work covers the first nine years of Nehru's prime ministership. Like the first volume, it is more than a biography, describing and analysing in detail both domestic and foreign issues of the period: the struggle between India and Pakistan for Kashmir, the first elections of free India based on adult suffrage; Korea, the Suez crisis, the invasion of Tibet and Hungary and the demand at home for the creation of new linguistic provinces
Through all these problems, Nehru led his country, no longer able to rely on Gandhi, more or less single-handedly, and yet with such success that both in India and throughout the world he was considered among the foremost statesmen of his day.
He became a semi-legendary figure in his familiar garb of white trousers, cap and black jacket with a red rose in his lapel.
Churchill named him 'the light of Asia' and during this period he truly reached the zenith of his power.
Sarvepalli Gopal's excellent biography is written from first-hand knowledge of the man whom he served for ten years in the Ministry for External Affairs and from the unlimited access granted him by Indira Gandhi to her father's private papers.
