Lord of the Kyber : The Story of the North West frontier
One hundred and forty years before
Russians invaded Afghanistan in 1979, causing an outcry of protest from the West. The British had marched into Kabul and put their puppet king on the throne. The years which
followed saw three wars, countless
skirmishes and thousands of deaths - but the Pathans, or Pushtuns, and their fellow tribesmen of the NorthWest Frontier, remained undefeated.
Pushtuns have a reputation for cruelty and constant fighting, but their courage and honour also inspired lasting respect among the British soldiers and statesmen who encountered them. Lords of the Khyber tells the stories of some of those great characters, both Pushtun and British: Kushal Khan Khattak, seventeenth-century chief and poet; Elphinstone, who paved the way for British interference in Afghan affairs; Alexander Burnes and Ivan Vitkevich, the British and Russian spies struggling to win favour for their countries; the missionary. Theodore Pennell, Abdul Ghaffer Khan, and his longtime adversary, Olaf Caroe, and others who have spent their lives on the North-West Frontier.
Through their eyes and experiences, LORDS OF THE KHYBER vividly portrays the true essence of this unique land and the struggle of a remarkable people for independence.
