Islam has officially been in Brunei' since about the fourteenth century AD. The first Brunei ruler to embrace Islam was Awang Alak Betatar, after his marriage to a princess of Johor (Old Singapore), in circa 1368 AD by assuming the title of Sultan Muhammad Shah. In the 'Salasilah Raja-Raja Brunei' (The Genealogy of the Kings of Brunei) by Datu Imam Yaakub it is mentioned that.
