La Sénégambie du XVe au XIXe siècle : Traite négrière, islam et conquête coloniale
This is a regional history conceived within a global vision of Senegambia, without taking into account either the borders of pre-colonial kingdoms or those of the current states inherited from colonial division. It is only within this framework that we can understand the dynamics of regional and interregional trade, the impact of Atlantic trade, the contradiction between Ceddo and Muslim power, the process of fragmentation and expansion of the Senegambian space, the gradual loss of autonomy in all areas, colonialism, and the current problems of regional integration of the six states that emerged from the breakup of Senegambia over the centuries. It is therefore not a history of each kingdom as presented to us by historiography in its multiplicity following a long process of political fragmentation between the 15th and 19th centuries. It is both a study of this dual dynamic of fragmentation and unification that underlies the entire history of this period marked by violence and regression in all areas during this crucial phase of contact with Europe, which continues to dominate our continent to this day. Only regional history can thus provide a large-scale account of the overall experience of our societies.
