Le Senegal sous Abdou Diouf : Etat et Societe
Senegalese democracy is considered exemplary by foreign observers and by a large section of the African intelligentsia, which is under siege from multifaceted forms of state terrorism. Given the democratic demands currently shaking Africa, it is tempting to view Senegal as a model. And yet, for a large majority of Senegalese, more and better democracy has become the central demand that mobilizes social movements.
This book examines the gap between external perceptions and internal democratic struggles. The perpetual democratic tension and proliferation of social practices are questioned and traced in order to identify, describe, and analyze the role of social actors and the legitimacy they seek.
The authors focus on analyzing the ruling class, its structures of legitimization, and social networks, taking as their site of observation the succession of L. S. Senghor by Abdou Diouf. Following the latter's rise to power step by step is indicative of the “ups and downs” of an unfinished democracy.
