Iran: Quest for security
This book is a study of the quest for political security by Iran's ruling elite: the Shah before the revolution, and the new Islamic leaders, led by Ayatollah Khomeini, today.
It argues that, despite the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty, there is no basic change in the character of the threat to the Iranian political system. Absolute monarchy has been replaced by another kind of absolutism in the garb of Islamic fundamentalism.
The author not only discusses the threat of insecurity to the past and present regimes but also national and regional insecurities. The threats analyzed are military, social, political and economic.
Dr. Singh evaluates the responses of the ruling elite to meet these threats, and the efforts made by it to overcome the possible constraints that might hinder its policies towards that end.
Dr. Singh concludes that it remains to be seen as to how long the present regime, despite its revolutionary image, will be able to hold on to power against the mounting tide of opposition.
