Decolonization in East Timor
Decolonization in East Timor presents the official perspective of the Republic of Indonesia on the political transition and integration process of East Timor during the mid-1970s. Prepared by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the book outlines Indonesia’s interpretation of the historical circumstances leading to the end of Portuguese colonial rule, the subsequent political instability, and the factors that prompted Indonesia’s involvement in the territory. It discusses Indonesia’s rationale for supporting integration, the diplomatic context of the period, and reactions within the international community. Through documentation, statements, and political analysis, the publication seeks to justify Indonesia’s actions as part of a broader decolonization process. As a primary source reflecting state policy, this work provides insight into the geopolitical narratives and diplomatic arguments surrounding one of Southeast Asia’s most contested historical events.
