Jordan
One of the many states which came. into being as a result of the First World War, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is among the smaller countries on the eastern borders of the Mediterranean that ancient zone of settlement and transit where civilization had its beginnings. Landlocked, apart from a forty-kilometre coastline at the tip of the Red Sea, more than four-fifths of the land area desert or semi-desert, Jordan has a gentle climate despite its harsh terrain.
Jordan's ancient history and unique position have produced a people with a variety of cultures that are the legacy of the centuries, besides being one of the best educated population in the Arab World. The schools, health services, communications and rapidly expanding economy are proof of man's ability to triumph over an unpromising environment and a difficult history. Under the leadership of King Hussein, the people of Jordan are building a modern society on the bedrock of traditional Arab values.
This volume, originally published to mark His Majesty's Silver Jubilee, covers all aspects of the Kingdom's life and heritage. Sumptuously illustrated with over a hundred photographs, Jordan captures in word and image the spirit of a proud and generous race.
