Empty fullness: Materiality and spirituality in contemporary Korean art
This book, published in conjunction with the 2014 touring exhibition, explores the profound interplay between materiality and spirituality in contemporary Korean art. Chung Joon‑Mo reframes the Korean monochrome (or “monotone”) tradition often labeled Dansaekhwa not simply as minimalist formalism, but as a deeply spiritual process rooted in repetition, restraint, and transformation. Artists featured in the volume draw upon traditional Korean materials such as hanji (mulberry paper) and moon jars to evoke an aesthetic of “empty fullness” a paradoxical space where emptiness is imbued with meaning, and material presence becomes a conduit for transcendence. This poetics of presence reflects not only a contemplative engagement with tradition, but also a philosophical dialogue about selfhood, process, and the sacred in art.
