Malay politics in Sarawak 1946-1966: The Search for unity and political ascendancy
While much has been written about the rule of the 'white rajas' in Sarawak and about the development of politics in this Malaysian state since independence, Malay Politics in Sarawak is the first study to focus on the political evolution of the Malay community in the crucial years from the cession to the British Crown in 1946 to independence in Malaysia and after. The author first sets the background of Malay society and the changes brought by Brooke rule, then traces the evolution of Malay politics as they emerged from the trauma of the 'cession controversy' which split the Malay community down the centre.
How this split was eventually healed and the Malays found a united voice through the Parti Bumiputera forms the main theme of this book and casts light on the present orientation of politics in the state. As such the book will be required reading for all those who wish to understand the contemporary scene in Sarawak-Malaysian politics.
The author, a Sarawakian, is at present a lecturer in Malaysian Studies at an institute of higher learning in Kuala Lumpur.
