They came to Japan : An Anthology of European reports on Japan. 1543-1640
They Came to Japan is a translated anthology compiling over thirty European reports, letters, and missionary accounts written between 1543 and 1640. Edited by Michael Cooper, the volume offers a vivid portrait of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Japan through the eyes of Europeans — merchants, Jesuit missionaries, and other travelers. The contributors include those who lived in Japan for extended periods and learned the language, as well as those whose contact was brief but insightful. Their writings cover Japanese society, culture, religion, politics, and daily life. Importantly, the collection not only provides historical and ethnographic observations of Japan, but also reveals European perceptions, biases, and attitudes toward this “newly discovered” country. Through thematic chapters, the editor organizes the reports to highlight different aspects of Japanese life, and many of these texts were previously unpublished or rare.
