Apprentice revolutionaries: The Communist movement in Laos, 1930-1985
This book provides a comprehensive historical analysis of the Communist movement in Laos from 1930 to 1985. Brown and Zasloff trace the ideological origins and organizational development of Lao communists, examining the role of the Indochinese Communist Party, the impact of World War II, and the influence of Vietnamese communists on the Lao struggle. They show how internal divisions, ethnic diversity, and the rugged geography of Laos shaped the Communist insurgency, and how external support, particularly from North Vietnam, contributed to the eventual consolidation of the Pathet Lao and the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party. The authors detail the transition from guerrilla warfare to formal political power, culminating in the establishment of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in 1975, and analyze the early years of communist rule, including challenges in nation-building, ethnic inclusion, and governance. Through archival research and interviews, the book offers insight into the strategies, leadership, and ideological debates that underpinned Laos’s Communist revolution.
