Brunei and Nusantara history in coinage
A comprehensive numismatic analysis of the role of coins as a primary historical source for the Brunei Sultanate and the Nusantara region as a whole. This work aims to uncover the economic, political, and trade relations development of Brunei from ancient to modern times through an in-depth study of circulating currency. The coins examined, including local currency minted by the Sultanate as well as foreign coins entering through trade routes (such as Chinese, European, and other Nusantara kingdom coins), serve as tangible artifacts reflecting the power of the Sultans, the influence of Islam, and the extensive maritime network of Brunei. Thus, Barrett demonstrates how numismatics offers a unique and credible perspective, complementing written and oral sources, to reconstruct and understand the dynamics of civilization, the lineage of rulers, and the trade interactions that shaped the historical landscape of Brunei and Southeast Asia.
