Beyond peacekeeping: Leveraging Indonesia’s United Nations Security Council candidacy for Indonesia’s strategic industries
This paper proposes leveraging Indonesia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029–2030 term to strengthen its global economic influence. Beyond its traditional focus on peacekeeping, Indonesia can align its UNSC role with economic diplomacy, particularly in promoting strategic and defense industries, South-South cooperation, and partnerships with resource-rich developing nations, especially in Africa. Key opportunities include using peacekeeping missions to showcase Indonesian defense products, strengthening South-South cooperation to secure critical resources, and utilizing the candidacy campaign as a platform for promoting strategic industries. To maximize benefits, Indonesia must ensure strong coordination between foreign policy and economic priorities, while navigating the geopolitical complexities of the UNSC with strategic diplomacy and realistic expectations.
