Towards Indonesia Emas 2045: Is it time to re-transform the Ministry of Foreign Affairs?
The Vision of 2045 for Indonesia’s development, known as “Indonesia Emas”, emphasizes the national objectives in achieving a sovereign, advanced, and sustainable Indonesia. The ultimate goal is to transform Indonesia into a highly competitive country domestically and a significant economic force globally, which will enhance its influence in international policy-making and secure its national interests. To achieve this, diplomacy will play a crucial role in repositioning Indonesia in the regional and global arenas, addressing global issues, and safeguarding national interests through various channels and forums.
In conducting foreign relations, several challenges persist, including inadequate support from relevant ministries and institutions in implementing agreements, a lag in aligning domestic policies with international commitments, and differing priorities based on sectoral interests. To address these issues, it is crucial to enhance the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in coordinating stakeholders throughout the planning, implementation, and evaluation phases. This requires necessary institutional arrangements and strengthening of the MFA as the primary agency responsible for foreign policy and foreign relations.
