Development and displacement: women in Southeast Asia
The papers in this book focus on women in Southeast Asia, and demonstrate that Boserup's formulation is equally applicable in this region. The important feature of capitalism in developing countries seems to be its ability to undermine women's traditional spheres of power and influence while simultaneously creating new conditions for further dependence on men. Thus, as a result of inappropriate ideas, values, and practices, women become displaced by the process of development.
