Swiss democracy: Possible solutions to conflict in multicultural societies
The positive reception the publication of Swiss Democracy received two years ago demonstrated the large public interest in Switzerland. As few English publications on Swiss polity and politics exist, political science colleagues use the book as a basic reference and a concise introduction, mainly to explain the sense and the functioning of consensus democracy, power sharing or federalism. Several hundred copies have been distributed to official visitors by the Swiss foreign ministry, and to libraries by the Swiss arts foundation 'Pro Helvetia' via Swiss embassies. I welcome the many questions and suggestions from constitutionalists as well as politi cians from India, Canada, USA, South Africa, Bosnia, Belarus, Slovenia and Poland, all eager to know more about power sharing, minority protec tion, decentralised implementation, designs of federalism, or local auto nomy in Switzerland. The book will be translated into Serbo-Croat and has already been published in Polish.
