Indonesia's role in the rise of sustainable tourism
Tourism has long been a source of income for many countries, including Indonesia. This industry, in some parts of our country, has become the backbone of their economy. Indonesia, in this case, has also been thriving in a tourism-based economy that focused on making Bali the base of the international tourist before going to other destinations. Though thriving from it, tourism also brings many adverse effects, especially in environment and socio-economic with the lack of inclusivity of locals in the industry. The world already recognizes this negative impact of tourism and many other sectors, thus formulating SDGs, which now become the focus of tourism development. One of the elements of sustainable tourism is ecotourism, which focuses on preserving the state of the destinations and their people to educate visitors.
When the pandemic hit, the tourism industry was shaken to its core because it lost the essential element, people movement. As a result, many destinations are closed and losing profits which causes massive layoffs. At this point, the paradigm for sustainable tourism once again goes to ecotourism. Indonesia already has many successful stories of ecotourism, especially the ones with solid cultures, so it should be ready to take local culture to recognize as best practice for sustainability in tourism.
