The Indonesian vision on the importance of deradicalization in international cooperation to counter terrorism
Terrorism is one of many international issues waiting to be resolved. Its action is designed mainly to influence the local government or to spread terror into the public and could trigger a massive disruption as well threatening peace and security globally. Since terrorism does not recognize international borders, there is an urgent need for commitment from every country in the world to combat global terrorism, one of them could be achieved by strengthening the international cooperation related to counter- terrorism.
This paper mainly discusses how deradicalization is an important tool to counter terrorism and should be included in any international cooperation related to counter-terrorism. Deradicalization is seen as a form of soft approach to counter terrorism and Indonesia sees it as one of ways to solve the root causes of terrorism. Since the program itself can differ from one country to another, it is important for countries that already implemented the deradicalization program, such as Indonesia, to share their best practices through programs of knowledge transfer and/or capacity building to create more alternatives to counter terrorism. This kind of approach could be the way to effectively promote deradicalization program globally.
