Diplomacy in the age of social media: the role of social media in public diplomacy and countering negative narratives against Indonesia
Social media now has enabled people to access information faster and to circulate information further. Previously only the government that could control the information. Yet due to the internet and social media, now non-state actors could also circulate information. Social media often becomes a new frontier in the digital age for promotion, debate, and propaganda.
The ministry of foreign affairs of Indonesia has also been active in social media. Besides using social media for promoting the work of the ministry, social media also becomes a new battleground for the diplomacy of Indonesia. As social media is open media including the non-state actors, the contents that are used as propaganda against Indonesia are also easily spotted. People could access the propaganda through the hashtag specific to the propaganda or negative narrative topic such as Free West Papua
This paper analyses how the usage of social media contributes to the public diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia as well as to counter the propaganda or negative narratives against Indonesia. the paper also discusses challenges as well as opportunities of the usage of social media in Indonesia’s diplomacy
