Agriculture, technology, and youth: a new recipe to feed the future Indonesia
The future of the agricultural sector in Indonesia has become an emerging and crucial issue. The concern is reasonable because farmers have an enormous contribution to national food security. As the population increases, the need for food also increases. Right now, youth are the largest generation in Indonesia. However, as youth seek out what they believe to be profitable and business-focused careers, they are increasingly turning away from agriculture. At the same time, the average age of farmers is increasing. If the large population of young people is healthy, educated, empowered, and employed in decent work, they can boost economic growth.
While on the other hand, advances in information and communication technology (ICT) over the past 20 years have enabled individuals to gather, analyze, and share data more effectively, as well as to visualize and understand, as never before, what this information means for agriculture. Farmers who practice smart farming have a better understanding of key elements like water, topography, aspect, vegetation, and soil types. This enables farmers to decide how to manage scarce resources in their production area in a way that is both economically and environmentally sustainable. Additionally, it enables farmers to promptly assess the quantity and quality of their output and alter their production methods as needed.
As this phenomenon exists, the Indonesian government should collaborate with related stakeholders nationally and internationally to optimize the demographic bonus and harness the technological advantages to sustain food security.
