Enhancing digital economy diplomacy by making Indonesian technology companies go global
In Indonesia, digital transformation has spawned several Southeast Asia’s biggest technology companies, such as Tokopedia, Gojek, and Bukalapak.Those companies have been valued for more than one billion dollars and are potentially giving Indonesia a new source of economic growth and investment especially in the time of Covid-19 pandemic. This is a clear sign for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) economic diplomacy to give serious attention towards potential Indonesian technology companies. As a ministry that coordinates foreign relations, MoFA is playing an important role to support Indonesia’s mission in enhancing its digital economy by being a connector of Indonesian technology companies to state and non-state actors of digital economy, in bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels.
This paper provides an overview about the potential of making Indonesian technology companies go global and also making it as a tool for Indonesia's economic recovery from Covid-19 pandemic situation. It also discusses the role of MoFA to support this mission in its economic diplomacy.
