Game industry: Untapped potentials for Indonesia’s future digital creative economy and trade powerhouse
Since 2015, Indonesia started eyeing the creative economy as its growing role in boosting domestic consumption and export. As the 4th largest population country in the world, Indonesia’s creative economy sectors have become very diverse and categorized into 17 sub-sectors. Its performance in recent years demonstrates its strong growth potential, as in 2020 creative economy sector has contributed Rp.1,1 trillion to Indonesia’s GDP. One of the significant and prioritized sectors is the gaming industry. In terms of future growth, Indonesia represents the biggest gaming market potential in South East Asia. Gaming industry has shown a considerable growth rate globally and nationally for the last couple of years. Even during the pandemic, this industry has become one of the sub-sectors that able to show positive rate growth. Gaming is therefore the top 2nd sector of the national creative economy and has become the fastest-growing sector during this pandemic situation.
Despite the opportunities, unfortunately our local game developers have not become the major player in the country. As to support Indonesia’s goal to be a global creative economy player by 2030, we should not overlook the untapped potentials of the gaming industry.
This paper will provide a comprehensive analysis on current situation of our local game developers, potential and challenges of Indonesia’s gaming industry, benchmark best practices from South Korea and Poland, and way forward on what need to be carry by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia on creating a sustainable and inclusive gaming industry environment.
