Managing temperature increase: the role of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in addressing global responsibility with national capability
As a tropical archipelagic state, Indonesia is more likely to experience the most substantial impacts and facing the threat of losing its low, small islands to the warming temperature of the planet. By signing the Paris Agreement and ratifying in national law, Indonesia affirmed its commitment to combat climate change. The Updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) has been submitted to the UNFCCC in August 2021 with targets that conform to the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities. Indonesia aims to limit Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 29% on its own, up to 41% with international supports.
While environmental issues are mainly managed by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and Ministry of National Development Planning, this paper will focus on how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs addresses the national climate target in its foreign policy.
