Transforming Indonesia to become a leading Global Value Chain (GVC) actor in Southeast Asia: opportunities and challenges for economic diplomacy
Economic diplomacy has been one of the 4+1 foreign policy priorities 2020-2024 set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of the Republic of Indonesia. Unfortunately, recent reports in 2020 show that Indonesia's GVC participation still relies on upstream production and limited manufacturing. Thus, despite all the potentials in Southeast Asia, Indonesia still needs to catch up with its lag in several areas.
This analytical paper will answer how Indonesia could transform into a leading GVC actor in Southeast Asia by examining the importance of GVC in the middle of the geopolitical tension and COVID-19 pandemic, finding out the shortcomings of benchmarking with other Southeast Asian countries, and pointing out the opportunities and challenges in Indonesia's economic diplomacy.
