The role of subregional economic cooperation in supporting covid-19 recovery plan in ASEAN: the case of IMT-GT and BIMP-EAGA
Aiming to spur the economic development and narrowing the development gap in the border areas of neighboring ASEAN countries by increasing the role of local governments, the subregional economic cooperation is the building bloc of the greater cooperation and integration within the Southeast Asia region. Indonesia itself is a member of at least two subregional economic cooperation, namely Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT). As the COVID-19 leaves no one behind, the pandemic has had a major impact on people’s lives in both subregions where many sectors are experiencing difficulties and many more projects are delayed.
Therefore, closer cooperation is needed in both initiatives to increase resilience and support economic recovery within the subregions and in the greater ASEAN sense. Thus, this paper seeks to analyze how the subregional economic cooperation plays a role in supporting and strengthening the economic recovery plan, especially how it contributes to the implementation of ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework (ACRF). This paper will also touch upon how Indonesia could benefit from the contributions made by the subregional economic cooperation in fighting the pandemic.
