IPEF’s digital economy initiative: How it can be a solution to the looming digital talent crunch in Indonesia
Indonesia, the largest digital economy in Southeast Asia, is grappling with a shortage of digital talent. If this trend continues, the country can lose US$ 28 billion from its technology sector by 2030. Unfortunately, the trend is also happening globally, including in the Indo-Pacific region. Existing frameworks and agreements have yet to adequately address the issue of digital talent, although there have been initiatives launched in a smaller scope, such as within the ASEAN.
On a larger scale, major powers like the United States and the European Union are looking to tap into the lucrative digital economy of the Indo-Pacific region. The US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), for instance, aims to govern the digital economy and improve connectivity. As a member of IPEF, Indonesia can benefit from this initiative by aligning its interests with U.S. stakeholders and leveraging private sector support.
