Enhancing Indonesia’s role in the Pacific region: Mitigating the economic impacts of sea level rise on the lives and livelihood of people
A new report from the International Labor Organization (ILO) warns that huge job and economic losses may result as the impact of climate change in 2030, with poor countries being the biggest losers. Global warming and climate change represent current threats to island states in the Pacific Ocean region. Many of the Small Island Developing States in the Pacific Region face persistent challenges linked to poverty, inequality, and climate impacts. Lost homes, lives, and livelihoods are among the worst impacts of rising sea levels. With its extensive coastline and millions of people living on low-lying land just above sea level, Indonesia is among the world’s most vulnerable countries to sea level rise. Given this shared concern, Indonesia as a leading actor in the Pacific Region can extend its efforts in mitigating climate impacts, specifically on the economy and livelihood of people in the Pacific Region.
Due to that fact, this paper is written to explore the impacts of sea level rise itself on different aspects of human lives in a general perspective. Sea Level Rise is a looming threat to countries situated in the archipelago with long coastlines specifically those in the Pacific Region, this paper will explain the dangers of Sea Level Rise specifically towards them and how the issue is currently being handled by Indonesia and other countries in the Pacific.
