Rowing between two reefs: Indonesia’s opportunities and challenges in attaining clean energy through IPEF and GDI
IPEF is a US led framework consisting of four pillars. Its third pillar on clean energy intends to pursue concrete targets to tackle climate change, including but not limited to, energy security and transition. Concurrently, GDI is a China led initiative. It aims to synergize international efforts to accelerate the implementation and achievement of SDGs 2030. Both IPEF and GDI are in its initial stages and needs further configuration. The focus of this paper is to identify Indonesia’s potential new bilateral cooperations in renewable energy sector with the US and China under the IPEF and GDI framework, as well as to assess its opportunities and challenges.
Indonesia’s participation in both initiatives is also a political stance. Indonesia is not in the position of only joining IPEF or GDI, considering the ongoing and increasing geopolitical tensions in the region. This is where the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia asserts its role.
