Taking out the trash: Promoting a circular economy for sustainable waste management & lesson learned from ASEAN's dialogue partners
Waste poses a significant global challenge that requires urgent attention and effective solutions. GWMO (2015) suggested that waste management is a cross-cutting issue impacting on many aspects of society and the economy. Hence, the issue of waste management is an impending threat both to the livelihood of our people and to the existence of our planet. The improper management of waste leads to pollution of land, air and water resources, loss of valuable raw materials, and negative impacts on biodiversity and human health.
In mitigating global environment impacts and facing the food and energy crisis ahead, Ministry of Foreign Affairs could be the driving force for promoting sustainable development. This policy paper will focus on whether Ministry of Foreign Affairs can promote a circular economy for a sustainable waste management. In addition to finding solutions to the waste problem, this policy paper will also try to explore potential to further cooperate under ASEAN mechanism.
