An analysis of EV industry development and government support in China: Assessment of potential implementation in Indonesia
The transportation sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) presents a viable solution for reducing emissions. Indonesia, recognizing the urgent need for cleaner alternatives in the land transportation sector, has set ambitious targets to drive EV adoption and establish itself as a leading production and export hub for EVs.
There are several things that Indonesia can learn from the Chinese Government such as the adjustment of monetary incentives for EV adoption over different periods, and providing subsidies to auto manufacturers based on petrol savings or based on mileage per charge. Indonesia can learn from China's experience by focusing on stimulating demand through consumer subsidies and supporting local EV manufacturers. Regular evaluation of the subsidy framework is essential, and implementing a carbon tax may be preferable to the dual-credit policy due to Indonesia's non-automotive producer status. Non-monetary incentives such as financial assistance for charging station establishment can drive investment in charging infrastructure.
