Indonesian energy supply chain: Breaking boundaries towards renewable energy
Climate change has been seen as one of the biggest security issues of the modern era. With the signing of Paris Agreement in April 2016, countries are beginning to look for alternative to conventional energy sources. The energy supply chain in Indonesia has been playing significant role in the economic development of the country. However, the energy supply still relies heavily on fossil fuels for its power generation.
This paper identifies the challenges and opportunities for Indonesia to acquire technologies essential for energy transition. The acquisition of clean energy through purchasing has been proved to be costly for the economy. An alternative method in acquiring the technology is through technology transfer. Technology transfer would not come for free, rather it may come in a form of investment that can bring profit or benefits. Therefore, Indonesia would need to be able to give incentives to attract potential investors to the country. In addition, Indonesia’s membership in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) could be used as a platform to strengthen ties with other member states in efforts to bring investment and accelerate clean energy transition in Indonesia.
