The hot seat: Reflection on diplomacy from Stalin's death to the Bali bombings
As a career diplomat and trusted confidant of prime ministers and foreign ministers from both sides of the Labor-Liberal divide, Woolcort nor only witnessed first hand some of the pivotal moments of the twentieth century but actively played a crucial part in them; events such as the creation of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), the decolonisation process in South East Asia, and the maintenance of the Antarctic Treaty.
From his first posting at the Australian Embassy in Moscow to his secretaryship of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Woolcott has traversed nations and continents, governments and ideologies, along the way helping to define Australia's place in the world and forging important political, cultural and economic ties with Australia's neighbours.
