Lech Walesa: Democrat or dictator?
Drawing on his unique insider's perspective as press spokesman for Lech Walesa from October 1989 to July 1990, Jaroslaw Kurski has written the first critical, clear-eyed account of the Polish leader's personal and political style. During his time in Walesa's office, Kurski became acquainted with the many forces and ambitions which were unknown to the general. public that drove the Solidarity hero as Poland shed its Communist rulers. Challenging conventional hagiography, Kurski criticizes Walesa's political modus operandi, arguing that the leader manipulated or alienated many of his old supporters including Tadeusz Mazowiecki, the man Walesa had championed as the first postwar non-Communist prime minister of Poland. While crediting Walesa's many accomplishments, the author paints a damning portrait of a man losing touch with both the political situation and the working people who brought him to power.
Through extensive interviews with many of Walesa's current and past associates, Kurski bolsters his own conclusions while providing a multifaceted picture of Walesa and of the events that propelled him to the presidency of Poland.
