Long road to Chagai
LONG ROAD TO CHAGAI is a history of Pakistan's nuclear program and the issues of non-proliferation which sprung from it, the contribution of individuals and organizations in making possible the miracle of May 28, 1998 despite the forces at home and abroad working to abort it. The book has a technical part which deals with the role of scientists, and a political part devoted to the contributions of politicians and political governments. Most of the prominent people, ministers, scientists, ambassadors and key military officials associated with Pakistan's nuclear program since its inception in 1972 have been interviewed except for President Ghulam lshaq, who was not approached, and Benazir Bhutto, who refused to grant an interview.
The book has also devoted considerable space to the problems that have arisen on the economic and diplomatic front after the tests, how the government is mishandling them and how best they can be dealt in the opinion of the experts in the field. A great deal of declassified documents and reports of the US Congress and administration have been used which were obtained by the author during his work at the Wisconsin Project in Washington.
