New York after midnight: 11 Indonesian short stories
The purpose of the 1990-1991 Indonesian Festival in the United States was to provide the American public, through art performances and exhibitions, with a glimpse of Indonesia’s cultural diversity. No picture of a nation is complete, however, without a look at its literature. And that is the premise behind this collection of contemporary Indonesian short stories. Foreign lovers of Indonesian culture, especially those who understand Indonesian well, already have the ability to delve into Indonesian literature. But for the general public, for the vast majority of readers, Indonesian literature and its predecessor, classical Malay literature, remain completely foreign. This book represents one step toward redressing that situation. It shows that Indonesian writers, like their counterparts in other countries, have the ability to imagine and create fantastic word worlds. They too, like Indonesian dancers, painters, sculptors, and musicians, are an integral part of the Indonesian cultural world.
