The Prophetic and the Political presents a selection of speeches and writings of Mr. S. Rajaratnam, the Senior Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Singapore. Mr. Rajaratnam has given so many speeches in the course of his distinguished political career and the range of topics covered has been so wide that the selection of his major and significant speeches and writings posed a problem. We had to work through the whole corpus of his speeches to identify those which would stand the test of time. Our first gleanings far exceeded the bounds set by the publisher. We had to be more drastic and dropped many pieces which would have done justice to the range of his interests and to his style — especially his sense of humor. We decided to confine our selection only to his political speeches dealing with significant domestic, regional and international issues.
