Advanced technology assessment system: Information technology for development

The publication of this issue of the ATAS Bulletin reflects the continuing interest of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) and the UNCTAD secretariat in the complex field of IT and its impact on social and economic development. In this regard the ECOSOC, upon recommendation of the CSTD at its second session held in Geneva, 15- 24 May 1995, decided that the main substantive theme, which will constitute the focus of the Commission's work during the inter-sessional period 1995-1997 will be information technologies and their implications for development. To accomplish this task, the CSTD will establish expert panels to delve into various aspects of the issues involved. This issue of the ATAS Bulletin will also provide invaluable background information for the work of the panels.
